Baliberkarya.com. Nasioanal-The Consulate General of India in Bali observed the anti-terrorism day with a lecture by the Consul General, Mr. R.O. Sunil Babu and the Head of Sub Division IV, Intelegence Division Bali Regional Police, Mr. PriyantoPriyo Hutomo,S,ik,M.H at the Ngurah Rai University on Friday, the 20th May 2016.

In his speech, the Consul General explained the history behind observing such a day. He stated that it was on 21st May 1991, that the former Prime Minister of India, Mr. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a terrorist in the midst of an election campaign. The Consul General also explained that India has faced acts of terrorism much before the world came to acknowledge its menace and the havoc it caused. The Government of India observes this day as Anti-terrorism Day by pledging to rid the country of the scourge of terrorism, by promoting unity, peace and harmony among all sections of society and by making the citizens aware of the dangers of terrorism, violence and its effect on people, society and the nation as a whole. He pointed out that Indonesia and Bali has also been affected by the cowardly acts by terrorists. Terrorism has now become a global problem with acts of terrorist violence being reported from all over the world.

The Consul General said that terrorist violence can be prevented if people are educated to resolve their differences through peaceful and non-violent means. He pointed out that he comes from the land of Mahatma Gandhi, the apostle of peace and non-violence. He urged the gathering to commit themselves to never resort to violence, to agree to disagree, peacefully and to never use fear as a tool for furthering one’s  aims. (bb/rls)
